About this work
Description
Sir Paul Nurse, president of the Royal Society, presents a documentary about whether the public really trusts science, particularly with regards to climate science as well as other controversies such as vaccination, the link between HIV and AIDs and GM foods. Are scientists to blame? Nurse visits NASA in order to ascertain the integrity of their data, petabytes of which are received daily. Nurse talks to notable climate change sceptic, Professor Fred Singer. However, the programme is clear that looking at the bigger picture, it's clear that climate change has definitively been caused by Man. Nurse visits Dr Phil Jones in Crewe, who was embroiled in a controversy involving the presentation of scientific data gathered from a variety of sources. Jones explains what happened when data was requested under Freedom of Information legislation and then used to harrass the scientists. Nurse mentions the dissemination of data human genome project as a positive exemplar of scientific practice. The journalist James Delingpole, who broke the 'Climategate' story, is interviewed. Nurse is then scathing about the editorial policies of different newspapers skewing scientific findings. Nurse discusses the peer review process in relation to science. Tony Lance, an HIV-AIDs denialist, talks about his regime - he eats pro-biotic foods believing the onset of AIDs to be related to microflora in the gut. Professor Jonathan Jones is experimenting with creating a new variety of potato, which is genetically modified (GM) is highly controversial and deeply unpopular with the public. The archivist of the Royal Society takes Nurse on a tour of their book store and shows him the minutes of the first meeting which was attended by Christopher Wren.
