    CHINA XXXVIII. The EMPEROR of CHINA, from the China Illustrât a of Kir- Cher, publilhed in 1667, XXXIX. The EMPEROR of CEII N A in his Robes, from the Hiftory of China hy P* J* E- Hu Halde, a Jefuit, firft publifhed at Paris in 4 Volumes Folio ; and reprinted in Holland in 1736, in 4 Volumes Quarto. The Materials for this Pliftory were collected during the lad twenty Years of the 17th Century, and therefore the Dreffes taken from this Work are faid to be thofe of 1700. The Robe is yellow, a Colour peculiar to the Imperial Family, no Subject, ex¬ cept Princes of the Blood, being permitted to wear it ; it is embroidered all over with the Figures of Dragons, which the Emperor bears alfo in his Coat of Arms; others may embroider their Cloaths with Dragons, but their Dragons muff have no more than four Claws : thofe of the Emperor are diftinguifhed by five. As to the other Chinefe Habits, their Figure will be fully comprehended by a View of the Print ; and it is only neceffary to obferve, that, except yellow, all Co¬ lours are worn by all Ranks of People, who in thefe Particulars are at full Liberty to indulge their own Fancy.
