Description
Australian-born rower educated at Eton and New College Oxford. He rowed in the Oxford crew in the Boat Race five times between 1883 and 1887. Army officer in the second Boer war, died of enteric fever in Johannesburg. Portrayed in sporting clothes, holding a whip and a lighted cigarette, and wearing the cap of the O.U.R.C. (Oxford University Rowing Club)
