    Three houses, which are in a clearance area, obtain water from a standpipe, the water being supplied by the South Stafford- shire Waterworks Co. One farm which obtained a piped supply from a spring, which showed sewage pollution, is now supplied by the South Staffordshire Waterworks Co. The Waterworks Company kindly send a chemical and bacteriological report on the water at their Cannock depot. In addition, six samples were taken by the Sanitary Inspector and submitted for chemical and bacteriological examination. The following is a typical report on sample of water supplied by the South Staffordshire Waterworks Company : — PARTS PER Chemical— 100,000 Total Solid Matter dried at 2i2°F 31.0 Free and Saline Ammonia Nil Albuminoid Nil Nitric Nitrogen 0.75 Chlorine 3-1 Oxygen absorbed in 4 hrs. at 8o°F Nil Appearance *.. Clear Injurious Metallic Contamination None pH Value 7-3 Hardness before boiling ... 13.8° Hardness after boiling ... 6.5° Temporary Hardness ... 7.30 Bacteriological— Count. On nutrient agar after 48 hours incubation at 37°c 2 colonies per ml. On nutrient agar after 72 hours incubation at 20—22°c 5 colonies per ml. Coli Aerogenes Content (pre- sumptive coli) after 48 hours incubation at 2y0c Nil per 100 ml. Samples from the wells and the colliery supply showed bac- teriological (not chemical), evidence of some remote sewage pollu- tion. The owners of the houses as well as the tenants were notified and all those supplied were advised to boil the water before using it for culinary and drinking purposes. It is possible that these houses may be supplied with water by the South Staffordshire Waterworks Co. in the coming year.
