But the art of phyfic fairly and honeftlj pradlifed I honour as the firft of profeflions, comprehending the moft ufeful, the moft ex- tenfive and univerfal knowledge of nature. I think a real Phyfician the moft liberal of charadlers upon earth 3 by which I do not meari every Doftor that goes about taking guineas, but him who will neither flatter the great nor deceive the ignorant, and who would prefer the fatisfacftion of making one invalid a healthy man, to the wealth of Radcliff or the vogue of Ward- But there is an evil fpirit of quackery gone forth, that has pofleiTed all orders of men among us. I would lay it, if J could, together with every demon of fuper- ftifion and error, and reftore the world to Truth and Nature.
