About this work

Description

Collection of copies of 'Revelaçions', 'Profecias' and 'Vatecinios' in prose and verse: with other extracts and poems in Portuguese. Many of the prophecies refer to King Sebastian I [1564-1578], and his supposed return to reign again. This was believed by many in Portugal down to the 18th century, who were known as 'Sebastianistas'. Though on fol. 20v it is stated that the nun Leocadia da Comeisaõ died in 685, this seems to have been written in error for 1685, as is shown by the reference to Nicolao Monteiro, Bishop of Oporto, who died in 1672. No. 10 Antonio Nuñes is a pseudonym of Victorino José da Costa. No. 22. Following the entry in the B.M. Catalogue. In the 'Enciclopedia Española', this author is entered as 'Nicolas Factor (Pedro)'.

Physical description

1 volume 1 l. + 156 ff. + 14 ll. 8vo. 21 x 141/2 cm. 20th cent. half-crushed-morocco binding by Lortic. Only a part of the first unfoliated leaf remains: some corners defective. The upper part of the date on the first leaf has been torn away, but it seems to be 1798. The spine has been lettered S. M. S. apparently taken from the heading 'J. M. J.' ='Jesus Maria José' on fol. I, the letter J having been incorrectly transcribed as S.
