Description
He holds a book open to show an illustration of a skeleton on the recto and a blank page on the facing verso, which in the finished state is engraved with lettering "Talis post mortem futur(us) O homo memineris te esse umbram". Below, a blank cartouche, which in the finished state is is engraved with lettering from Psalm 71: "David im 71 Ψ v. 5 Du bist meine Zuversicht Herr Herr meine Hoffnung von meiner Jugend an."
