Description
At least two of the three dwarfs are copied or adapted from prints of Dutch share-vendors published in the series Het groote tafereel der dwaasheid, 1720, which in turn were adapted from earlier prints published in Augsburg by Martin Engelbrecht. The middle figure, here called Peregrino Mountebanko, is adapted from a swaggering officer lettered in the Dutch version "Ontsprongen rondom bedekte Blaaskaak" (Muller, op. cit., p. 117, no. 3564.29 b 7). The right figure, here called Timothy Mouth, is copied from the Dutch etching of man carrying a peepshow, described as "Actieuse Nacht-Wind-Zanger met zyn Tover Slons" (Muller, op. cit., p. 115, no. 3561.26 b 2)
