Early series

This series of files spans the period of the First World War. It includes correspondence of a very varied nature with a wide cross-section of Balfour's contacts both at home and abroad. Some is of a fairly routine nature but there are insights into the role and function of the WBSR and its constituent departments, and also into Balfour's own interests and activities in the fields of military and tropical medicine and public health. The correspondence is alphabetically arranged by name of correspondent, with some whole files devoted to a particular individual. It includes correspondence with the Secretary, WBSR, during Balfour's absences abroad on active service.
