    by a consistent and logical interpretation. This interpre- tation may possibly be subject to modification, but it will serve until something better has been suggested. The facts on which the theoretical interpretation is based are, how- ever, irrefutable. I conclude with an extract from the preface of my ‘ Comparative Electro-Physiology ’ (1907) that by the new methods employed not only a deeper perception of unity (of physiological mechanism of plant and animal) has been made available, but also many regions of inquiry have been opened out which had at one time been regarded as beyond the scope of experimental exploration.
