After the bottles are prepared and connected, I would ad- vise testing them by closing the spigot of the gasometer, and blowing through the first tube again, to learn whether they are air-tight. Now that the bottles are in readiness and properly connected, place the quan- tity of ammonia intended to be used into the retort. One pound will make about thirty gallons of gas. D is a stove-like arrangement, with a sand-dish on the top for holding and heating the retort. Into this sand-dish place suffi- cient sand to protect the retort, or the heat will crack it. Then place the re- tort into it, and connect with the long pipe of the first bottle by the rubber tubing, and then open the spigot of the gasometer.
