About this work

Description

In the foreground, boatmen (fishermen?) approach or leave a dock built of stone blocks, illustrating the lettering "To live, man endures toil and trouble". In the distance a large church similar to the Frari in Venice, and a large brazier from which thick smoke arises. On the horizon, the sun either rises or sets, showing an early start to work or a late finish
