Compilation of segments (off-air copies) of various programmes featuring Dr. Roy Porter. 1: 'Credo' (Channel 4) on man's relationship with and rights over animals with Dr. Porter talking about how animals are portrayed in the bible. 2: 'Timewatch - Birth of the Expert Witness' (BBC TV) traces the history of forensic medicine and its acceptance as crucial evidence in the law courts, featuring Dr. Porter, Christopher Andrew and Catherine Crawford. 3: 'Thinking Aloud' (BBC2) - discussion programme on the subject of 'Death - why can't we bear to talk about it?'. Participants Dr. Porter, Maurice Bloch, Richard Harries and Beryl Bainbridge discuss views and fears of death with host Michael Ignatieff. 4: 'Timewatch - VD and the Victorians' looks at the Contagious Diseases Act of 1864 in which women suspected of being prostitutes where requested by police to undergo a medical examination to check for venereal disease. If a woman refused she had to prove in court that she was not a prostitute. Dr. Porter speaks about women's rights at this time and the protest group led by Josephine Butler. 5: 'Channel 4 News' report on a new advert for condoms. Dr. Porter talks about 18th century condoms or 'English overcoats' as they were known!
