Description

Scrapbook, compiled by an unknown individual, of press-cuttings relating to the death of Herbert William Allingham, FRCS (1862-1904), Surgeon to the Household of HM the King. Allingham, recently widowed, committed suicide by morphia injection on 4 Nov 1904 in a Marseilles hotel while on his way to Egypt for the good of his health. The volume contains numerous press reports of his death, from the British and European press, as well as obituaries, some illustrated with portraits, and reports on his will and bequests.

Allingham was succeeded as surgeon to the Royal Household by Anthony Bowlby (whose papers are held in the Wellcome Library, GC/181)
