    The rapid exhaustion of the third edition has rendered the publication of a fourth necessary. The text of the volume has been revised throughout, and such additions and corrections made as the passing of time and the advancement of knowledge have made advisable. A large number of illustrations have been added, and others, which required it, have been altered. The author feels as strongly as ever, as he has expressed himself in previous editions, that the choice of food for a baby is so difficult a problem that no one but a trained physician should attempt it. Nevertheless he is well aware of the existence of great numbers of instances, some of which have come to his personal notice, where parents have been thrown absolutely upon their own resources in this matter. In a Second Appendix, there¬ fore, he has given a fuller explanation of the principles which govern physicians in the selection of an infant’s diet in health and in illness, as well as some formulae which, he hopes, may serve as a guide to those so unfor¬ tunately situated that they may need to study this por¬ tion of the volume. All others he urgently advises to let this matter rest entirely in the physician’s hands.
