Biographical note

Robert Hunt (1807-1887) was born in Plymouth Dock (Devonport). He was apprenticed to a surgeon but left after 18 months as a result of poor treatment; however, he continued to train as an apothecary and became manager of a London dispensary through the influence of the Quaker philanthropists Elizabeth Fry (1780–1845) and William Allen (1770–1843). In 1831 he set up in business in Plymouth; from 1837 he was again in Devonport. He was heavily involved in the early development of photography, corresponding with Sir John Herschel (1792-1871), and also in education for working people. For further information see his entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
