    Su Iph uroii s Fu mi get tions. IS: those remedies which have been heretofore employed iia similar affections. Our opinion of the advantage to be de¬ rived from the method of M. Gales is founded on cases treated under our own eyes; most of the patients having been before unsuccessfully treated by the usual methods. By means of it, hereditary tetters, and those which had existed from childhood and appeared to be so inherent in the economy as to lead us to despair of their ever being cured, and which had been unsuccessfully treated in various ways, have been perfectly removed. We have also seen diseases of the skin, complicated with the syphilitic virus, which could not be cured by sudoriffes and mercury, exhibited under many forms, and at dif» ferent periods, promptly removed by a slight ante syphi¬ litic course, when the patients were previously sub¬ mitted to the sulphurous fumigations. These fumigations appear to exert an exciting effect upon the lymphatic system, and have been employed by M. Gales; to combat certain diseases depending upon a loss of tone in. ibis system, such as scrofula, &c. M. Gales has also employed tins remedy in certain cases of gout, rheuma¬ tism and palsy, and often with success. But from the experience of M. Gales, and our own observation, futnx* gations have not succeeded so constantly or completely in the cure of gout, as in affections of the skin. Those gouty persons who have used them in our presence have been benefited, and many have been perfectly cured, es~ pecially when it was atonic, and of long duration. Rheumatisms have been more readily cured by Dr. Gales, particularly chronic rheumatism. The success of fumi¬ gations has appeared to us to be more uniform in those cases of palsy which have succeeded apoplexy.” “In giving the result of our observations, it should be mentioned, that in some instances the fumigations have
