![TIFLIIBTXTES TO THE MEMORY OE THE LATE DR. GALVIN G. PAGE. From the Harwich Press, June 10, 1869. The late Dr. Calvin Cr. Page. Dr. Page was born, where he lived for about thirty-nine years, in the family mansion at No. 69 Myrtle Street, Boston. His death, as pre¬ viously announced, took place at his late resi¬ dence, No. 128 Marlboro’ Street, (where he had resided but about a month,) on Saturday, May 29th, and has called forth numerous expressions of respect and esteem from his associates in the medical profession, as well as from the various societies and associations of which he was an honored member. As a tribute to one with whose face we were pleasantly familiar for several years, we copy such mention of him as has come to our notice : From the Boston Transcript, May 29. The announcement of the death of Dr. Calvin G. Page will carry surprise and grief to a large circle of acquaintances and friends. His fellow-citizens in general, also, among whom he was widely known as a man of uncommon intelligence, energy and public spirit, will receive the sad tidings with deep regret. Dr. Page was a man of great worth, and warmly be¬ loved by those who knew him, both in his profession and out of it. He was the writer of the last report of the School Committee, a document marked by excel¬ lent qualities of judgment, courage and taste. He served honorably through three years of the war, and his early death is to be traced directly to a dis¬ ease contracted from his exposures in that arduous work. He is one more victim added to the vast mul¬ titude of our noblest and best sacrificed in tha t dread struggle for the salvation of the country. His spir¬ it has ascended to heaven in the very hour when flowers were strewn and bells tolling in memory of the great army of his departed comrades His mem¬ ory will long be green in many a loving heart. From the Sunday Times, May SO. We are deeply grieved to announce the death of Dr. Calvin G. Page. He had just moved into his new residence at 128 Marlborough Street, when he was stricken down by an attack to which he had been occasionally subject ever since a severe illness, bro’t on by his professional exposures as Surgeon in the army during our late war. He was but thirty-nine years of age, endeared to all who knew him, sur¬ rounded by the brightest charms of life. In the death of this estim ible citizen, this chosen friend, this gifted and beloved young physician, a world of hopes is suddenly blighted. Alas, that it should be so! And yet we must say, God’s will be done. (From the Suffolk District Medical Society.) [Copy.] ' Boston, June 2d, 1869. Mrs. Page—Dear Madam:—The undersigned, a Committee of the Suffolk District Medical Society, were directed to transmit to you the following, from the Society’s Records: “The Suffolk Dist. Medical Society would hereby express the loss which they feel in the death of their associate. Dr. Calvin G. Page, a man whose integrity of purpose, and honesty and kindness of heart ren¬ dered him a faithful physician and true friend. “His demeanor in professional life, and his social relations with his medical brethren, will always be an example to the members of this Society, who de¬ sire to convey to his family this testimony of their appreciation of his worth. “Respectfully, your obedient servants, (Signed) B. Joy Jeffries, Henry K. Oliver, jr. R. M. Hodges.” The “ Boston Medical and Surgical Journal ” adds to the notice of the Transcript, given above, that “ The profession of which Dr. Page was a valued member may claim to be among liis most prominent mourners.” The annual meeting of the Mass. Medi¬ cal Society occurred June 2d, 1869. Ad¬ dress by Alfred Hitchcock, M. D., of Fitchburg. He closed with the following words: Mr. President and Fellows:—A sacred and time-honored usage, no less than Chris¬ tian courtesy and fraternal affection, re¬ quires me to announce to this Society their mortuary record of the past year. Twen¬ ty-two of our members have died—even while my pen is making this record anoth¬ er name is to be added to the list. Dr. Calvin Gf. Page, of this city, once Record¬ ing Secretary of this Society, died on Saturday last. In early manhood he fin¬ ished his work; a work not long when measured by years, but lengthened and rounded by his energy, integrity and fidel¬ ity to every Christian duty. He was a man of great worth, and warmly beloved by those who knew him. He served hon¬ orably through three years of the war, and his early death is to be traced directly to a disease contracted from his exposure in that arduous work. He is one more victim added to the vast multitude of our noblest and best whose lives were sacri¬ ficed that our country might live. He died on Decoration Day. His spirit passed to its home in the skies when the air was ladened with the perfume of memorial flowers strewn on the graves of his depart¬ ed comrades. “ His memory will long be green in many a loving heart.” Let these oft-recurring proofs of mortality remind us that our profession is not omnipotent. One year ago, a prominent member, active in every duty, went out from our annual banquet, quickly to hear and obey Death’s hasty summons. To-day the fuueral obse¬ quies are scarcely finished for one in ripe mauhood, whose death makes the last sad breach in our ranks, and brings a fresh and heavy sorrow to all our hearts. We would not call them back, nor would we, with too curious eyes, try to discover the coast-line of the farther shore where soon our own voyage will be ended ; nor would we vainly question who next will passover the river; but rather, as the bliud child confides in its father, let our faith take hold of the Divine Master while we toil on, and patiently wait till He calls us home. “We will argue not Against Heaven’s band or will, nor ’bate a jot Of heart or hope; but still bear up, and steer Right onward.” (Copy.) At a regular meeting of the Boston So¬ ciety for Medical Observation, held last evening, thefollowing resolutions were pre¬ sented by Dr. Ropes, and were unanimous¬ ly endorsed by the society: Resolved,—That this Society has heard with deep regret of the death of Dr. Calvin G. Page. Resolved,—That in the death of Dr. Page this So¬ ciety, as well as the medical profession of Boston, has sustained a severe loss. Resolved,—That those of us Who knew Dr. ’Page will always remember with pleasure his kind dispos¬ ition and gentlemanly behavior, and will entertain feelings of the highest respect for his professional abilities Resolved,—That a copy of these resolutions be for¬ warded to the family of the deceased, to whom this society desires respectfully to express their feelings of heartfelt sympathy. Page—Dear Madam: I herewith transmit to you the notice taken of the death of Dr. Page at a meeting of the School Committee held at the City Hall on the 8th inst. in the following resolutions, submitted by Dr. Reynolds and unanimously adopted. Appropri¬ ate remarks were made by various members of the Board and by his Honor the Mayor, President of the Board: Resolved,— “ That the board has received with deep regret the announcement of the death of its honored member. Dr. Calvin G. Page. “That Dr. Page’s long connection with this com¬ mittee, his faithful discharge not only of the labors always inseperable from such a trust, but of the many additional responsibilities with which this board has from time to time charged him, had won for him our warm regard and esteem. “That the board directs these resolves to be enter¬ ed upon its record, in testimony of its sincere respect for i ts late associate, and a copy transmitted to the family of the deceased.” Most respectfully, (Signed) BARNARD CAPEN, Secretary of the School Committee. Dear Mrs. Page—At the first meeting of the Standing Committee of the new North Religious Society held after the death of your husband, the undersigned were appointed to write and trans¬ mit to you some expression of the love and es¬ teem in which our lamented associate was held by us all. We beg you to accept the assurance of our profound grief and sympathy with you in this great affliction. We are most respectfully your friends and ser¬ vants—for the Committee, THOMAS SPRAGUE, Chairman. Pelham Bonney, Sec’y. The following resolutions were adopted by the Committee, and a copy ordered to be forwarded to the family of the deceased: Whereas, in the unexpected removal from this life of our late associate. Dr. Calvin G. Page, we have suffered a severe loss, and desire to make some record of the great respect and affection we bear him, it is therefore Resolved,—That we shall always remember with gratitude the warm interest our friend took in the prosperity of' our society, as well as the many choice virtues that adorned his character. Resolved,—That although Dr. Page was taken from us in the full prime of his powers and prom¬ ise, when life seemed most fair and attractive to him, we believe he has gone to a better world— to a closer fellowship with his God—and we would devoutly say to our heavenly Father, “ Thy will be done.” Resolved,—That we earnestly sympathize with the afflicted family of our departed friend, and implore for them every comfort of the Divine Grace. - (Copy.) Boston, JuTy 3d, 1869. Mrs. Page—Dear Madam:—At the meeting of your husband’s Class Commencement Day, the following resolutions, offered by the undersigned Committee, were accepted by the Class, and it becomes our sad duty to transmit them to you: By a sad and sudden dispensation of Provi¬ dence, our late classmate, Calvin Gates Page, has been taken from us. We who knew him intimately mourn the loss of an intelligent associate, a genial companion and a warm-hearted friend, whose grasp was al¬ ways hearty and whose generous, energetic na¬ ture led him continually to good services, not only to his classmates, but to all who stood in need of a friend. After taking his degree in Medicine, he served his country faithfully during the war, and his city afterwards in peace, and has left behind him an honorable record of public spirit and good works. But we must especially sympathize with his family, to whom the blow is a severe one and hard to bear; for he was taken away when, hav¬ ing removed to pleasanter scenes, he was about to renew his career of usefulness and was look¬ ing forward to the future with the brightest an¬ ticipations. While we lament the sudden death of one who had everything to live for, it is a consolation to feel that he has left behind so honorable a name. C Horace Richardson, (Signed) < C.
