About this work
Description
Anna Foster reports from Sierra Leone after the country was declared Ebola-free in November 2015. Foster visits staff and pupils at The Milton Margai School for the Blind, who relay their experiences of the Ebola outbreak, and talk about how they were affected by restrictions on the touching of others for hygiene reasons. Foster visits a Red Cross Ebola treatment centre in Kenema, where the outbreak originated in Sierra Leone. Hallie David James, a worker at the centre, guides Foster through the typical processes. Foster and James take Ebola survivor Abdulai Fatorma to a cemetery, where his loved ones are buried. George Quaker from the charity Street Child discusses how the organisation helps Ebola orphans in the Kenema area. Foster talks to a young boy called Richard, whose immediate family were victims of Ebola. Volunteer British medic from the King’s Sierra Leone Partnership Natalie Mount and Sister Umatu describe the hospital grounds and relay their experiences working during the outbreak. Foster talks to American doctor Ian Crozier, who contracted the virus in 2014 whilst working in a government hospital in Kenema. Foster arranges a surprise video call between Crozier and Issa French - a nurse he was close to in Kenema. Lee Ferguson from the UK’s Department for International Development exhibits a Central Oxygen Production Supply Unit, which his team engineered for Connaught Hospital in Sierra Leone. Foster then visits members of the Kenema Ebola Survivor Football Club, who describe their experiences suffering from Ebola. Acting Director-General of The World Health Organisation Dr Anders Nordström discusses the complications in the handling of the Ebola outbreak in 2013/14, and what The WHO have learned in preparation for similar outbreaks in the future. President of Sierra Leone Ernest Bai Koroma talks about his experiences leading the fight against Ebola. Sound clips are played of Sierra Leonean radio adverts produced by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, providing advice to school children on good hygiene. Foster organises a discussion between key figures in the fight against Ebola, including Head of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Sierra Leone; Country Director for the United Nations Development Programme Sudipto Mukerjee; and UNICEF’s Geoff Wiffin. Finally, Foster visits St. Thomas’ Municipal School in Freetown, where the charity Save The Children is helping pupils regain the education they lost during the Ebola outbreak, due to school closures.
