About this work

Description

The sixth in an eight-part series following the stories of people with various sleep disorders as they visit Papworth Sleep Clinic. This part features Derek and Matt who both have nights disturbed by violent dreams which they re-enact as they sleep. Both have REM sleep disorder. Derek has never responded to treatment and his sleep disorder is particularly extreme. By day he is a mild-mannered middle-aged man - his wife describes how in his sleep he becomes like a totally different man, fighting and swearing, often destroying everything in the room. He and his wife can no longer share a bedroom. He has frequently suffered nasty wounds during his nocturnal battles and sometimes has to go to A&E up to 3 times a week. Papworth have been treating him for a year and tried 6 different drugs to no avail so far so now they are trying a ground-breaking treatment which is very costly. Matt has a similar problem although not so extreme or so violent although his wife says he too turns into a different character during sleep. Papworth finally succeed on treating his sleep disorder by using Prozac.
