    SECTION III.—HYGIENE AND SANITATION. (a) General Measures of Sanitation. Drainage and Sewerage.—The drainage and sewerage surveys of Dar es Salaam were completed by the Consulting Engineers and the reports and estimates for the sewerage and storm water drainage of Dar es Salaam and the sewerage of Tanga were received early in 1931. The complete schemes allowing for future development were estimated to cost the following sums:— of all planned areas Work recommended for Dar es Salaam Sewerage Dar es Salaam Storm Water Drainage Whole scheme £ 201,660 156,598 early construction £ 91,743 No specific recommendation Tanga Sewerage ... ... ... ... 92,953 ... 59,892 The completion of the whole schemes is not of course contemplated in the immediate future nor were they recommended by the Consulting Engineer for immediate execution: but recommendations for the construction of the outfalls and main trunk sewers, and for certain storm water drainage works in the case of Dar es Salaam were submitted in consultation with the Director of Public Works to Govern¬ ment. Such would allow of the elimination of many existing sources of nuisance and complaint, and of the gradual extension of the branch sewers in the future as financial conditions improve. Water Supplies.—Improvements to urban water supplies were carried out at most of the larger towns during the year by the Public Works Department whose Director has kindly supplied me with the following information in regard to them :— Dar es Salaam.—The supply is now drawn almost entirely from ten artesian boreholes situated at the lower end of Gerezani valley and delivering to a well from wh ich the water is pumped by a new electrically driven plant with oil driven engines in reserve to storage towers at the top of the cliff, from which it gravitates throughout the town and to the Oyster Bay suburb at a distance of five miles. The water is of excellent quality bacteriologically but somewhat hard and slightly saline. The consumption averaged 255,000 gallons per day and increased by 9 per cent, over that for 1930. Consumers increased by 22 per cent. The new pumphouse was completed and some additional three miles of distribution mains were laid during the year. A welcome increase in the number of kiosks'for the purchase of “main” water throughout the town, at a nominal cost of one cent per four-gallon tin has benefited both the population and the revenue. None of the old military public sources of supply remain in use. Tanga.—Great improvement of the former very inadequate supply has been effected by the construction of additional bores in the vicinity of the railway station, and the new pumping plant is being provided. The average daily consumption was 35,225 gallons and the number of consumers increased by 27 per cent. Bukoba.—The new scheme was almost completed at the end of the year, the infiltration gallery and underground concrete reservoirs were constructed and some three and a half miles of mains laid. Mwanza.—Practically the whole of the new scheme which embodies a new intake from the lake, a 40,000-gallon steel storage tank and over eight miles of mains were completed. Dodoma.—The catchment area and reservoir capacity were considerably increased, the capacity of the latter being raised by 25 per cent, to 31,750,000 gallons; two and three-quarter miles of mains were laid and connections to forty consumers provided. The daily consumption is 13,500 gallons and the maximum estimated daily loss by evaporation is -42 inches.
