Description
This print, one of a series of seven, was published as the "Theatrum vitae humanae" and displayed six stages of the life of man, in connection with the five architectural orders (the sixth being destruction, showing ruins and skeletons representing death). While wrestling and tilting take place in the background, a family sit around a table in the foreground with their children involved in discussion, with a decorative two storey edifice rendered in perspective. Bringing up the next generation, with responsibilities and duty to God and the state in a just society is contrasted to injuries inflicted by fighting behind
