About this work

Description

"The Anio Novus and Acqua Claudia are carried together from their catch-basins on lofty arches, the Anio being above. Their arches end after the Pallantian gardens, and from that point their waters are distributed in pipes to serve the city. Yet the Claudia first transfers a part of itself on to the arches which are called Neronian near the temple of Ancient Hope. These arches pass along the Caelian Hill and end near the temple of the deified Claudius"--Frontinus, De aquis urbis Romae, I.20. The print shows men gesticulating among the ruins, some of them holding weapons
