Description

The engraving provides visual thanks to Jenner on behalf of the vaccinated person whose name is entered on the blank form below. Above, a crowned eagle with chequered wings (the symbol of Moravia) carries a roundel engraved "1801" with a banderolle engraved "Es lebe Dr Jenner". From the top right, the eye of God sends down rays of light. Left, a mother and three children offer a pagan sacrifice in thanks for vaccination: the altar is engraved "14 May 1796", the starting date of Jenner's experiments on James Phipps. Right, Aesculapius holding his staff addresses three children and points up at the tribute to Jenner. Far right, a column encircled by a banderolle engraved "Gestalt, Gesundheit, und Leben geschützt".

Nagler, Neues allgemeines Künstler-Lexikon, Leipzig 1835-1852, vol. 21, pp. 221-222 ("Weidlich, Ignaz Joseph, Maler, geboren zu Gros–Meseritsch in Mähren 1753, bildete sich zu Rom unter Mengs und P. Battoni zum Künstler, und verweilte 16 Jahre in jener Stadt. Von Rom aus ging er mit einigen Naturforschern, welche Maria Theresia auf Reisen geschickt hatte, nach Rhodus, und von da nach Sicilien. Hierauf ordnete er in Rom seine Angelegenheiten, und kehrte nach Wien zurück, wo er mehrere Bildnisse malte. Der grösste Theil seiner Werke ist aber in Mähren zu suchen, indem der Künstler den Rest seiner Jahre in Brünn verlebte . Er hatte als Bildnissmaler Ruf, da er den Charakter des Individuums gut zu fassen wusste. In seinen historischen Werken, deren man in Kirchen findet, ist er weniger glücklich. Die Bilder späterer Zeit sind trocken und schmutzig in der Färbung. Auch schöne Federzeichnungen finden sich von ihm. Die meisten sind mit Wasserfarben ausgemalt. Starb zu Brünn 1815.")

Creator/production credits

The designer was presumably the Ignaz Joseph Weidlich (1753-1815) described by Nagler (loc. cit.) as a native of Moravia, whence the display in this print of the Moravian eagle

The engraver seems likely to have been the Joseph Gerstner (1768-1813) described by Nagler (loc. cit.), despite his name appearing in the lettering as Gerster. The name here seems to be etched in the same hand as the signature "J. Gerstner sc." on an engraved portrait of Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (Wellcome Library no. 9688i)
