About this work

Description

The scene is depicted with a trompe l'oeil serrated edge to remind the viewer of the stamps that could be bought as part of the anti-tuberculosis campaign. The same device appears in at least one other tuberculosis poster by Wilquin ("Le B.C.G protège contre la tuberculose" with a figure of a winged guardian angel): see Christie's South Kensington catalogue of posters 3 February 2000, lot 132, and in another poster after a stamp by Cheffer (this catalogue no. 47684i), dated 1935
