    was intercepted, but the incarceration had taken place in such a way, that part of the canal remained pervious. The strangulated portion adhered to the sac, and was of a black colour, and rotten; and the contiguous part, exterior to the sac, as well as the internal part of the abdominal parietes, was green. The gall-bladder was somewhat larger than usual, and, with some bile,, it contained sixteen calculi. They were of a yellow colour, inflam- mable, and not very small. The medullary substance of the brain exhibited numerous bloody points, and evidently contained a large quantity of blood. The left lung adhered to the costal pleura and to the mediastinum, and the thyroid gland was somewhat thicker than usual. At the orifice of the pulmonary artery I observed that there were four sigmoid valves—one was larger than the rest, and seated anterior to them. A similar instance is recorded by I. Z. Petsche. The subject was a woman, in whom there were three large valves, and a fourth of a smaller size. Nevertheless I considered it a rare occurrence. Morgagni, xxxiv. 15. When hernial tumours are of a small size, they are apt to be neglected by the patient, even when pain in the abdomen is experienced. Therefore it is incumbent upon medical practitioners to make attentive examination in such cases.
