Description

Various fragments of verse, many with alterations and corrections; a printed ballad entitled "The Countryman Ramole, or a Sudden Surprize" [a lampoon on Sir Francis Burdett, the celebrated politician, 1770-1844]; a printed obituary notice of Mrs. Eliza Flower from the Monthly Repository, April 1810; "The Virtuoso", a poem by Akenside [Mark Akenside, F.R.C.P., F.R.S., 1721-1770, physician and poet]; a curious inscription from Kingswood, Gloucestershire, reading as follows: "John Popjay, surjon, apotecary, and Midwife. He draws teeth and bleeds, at the lowest terms. Confectionery, tobacco, snuff, tea, coffee, sugar and all sorts of perfumry sold here. N.B. New laid Eggs every morning by Mrs. Popjay"; a silhouette of a Roman gladiator.

Figure of a soldier with a helmet, shield and brandishing a sword, made of white paper, approximately 5cm long and 3.5cm wide, found on f.47r (originally stuck to black square backing with 'Ajax' written above in pencil), packaged and labelled separately.
