1 autograph letter, signed, from one Philip Vincent (fl. 1745) to Sir James Johnstone (d. 1772) discussing the care of a mentally-ill young man, probably George Johnstone (1720-1792), 3rd Marquess of Annandale. Vincent examines the suitability of the country house at which the young man is currently kept, assesses the suicide risk presented by its moat, and describes the young man's general mental state.

Biographical note

By inquest in Chancery in March 1748 the Marquess of Annandale was declared to have been a lunatic since December 12th 1744, almost exactly a year before the date of this letter; he died in an asylum at Turnham Green, Middlesex.
