About this work

Description

Photomacrograph of the head of a horsefly (unknown species). The fly's mouthparts and two large green compound eyes (for accurate perception of movement) can be seen. Female horseflies are aggressive blood feeders and use their blade-like mouthparts to cut the skin and nearby blood vessels causing very painful bites. In contrast, males feed only on plant nectar and pollen. Width of image is approximately 2 cm.
