About this work

Description

'Book of Receipts of Physick and Cookery' Collection of medical, cookery, household and veterinary receipts, in different hands, c. 1816-1826 Cookery recipes begin at the front of the volume following a 'List of Books' (ff. 1-2), the medical recipes mostly from the back. Accounts, 1816-1826 are interspersed . The name Colles appears several times, though it is not possible to identify which member of the family this relates to (Thomas, Henrietta, Sally and Susannah are all names which appear in the accounts), and the family appears to have been resident in Ireland. 'Mrs Talbot's method of Brewing & Rules to be Observed relating to it' (p. 21) has appended the note 'As the malt in England is stronger than the Irish you should therefore allow a larger quantity'. The cookery and domestic receipts include 'Lady Grandville's Perfume for Cheny Jarrs' (a kind of potpourri) (p. 2), 'Sir Wm Franklin's Rub Curd Cheese' (p. 13) and a number of recommendations for preparing and keeping barm (=yeast). Besides 'Mrs Talbot's method of Brewing' there is 'Mr Leslie's Ale' (p. 22). A number of household, veterinary ('for the cure of the Distemper among the Horses' f. 65v) and agricultural ('Mr Levinge's Manure', 'to prevent smuttyness in Corn' f. 60) preparations feature among the medical recipes. There are three receipts for 'destroying mice' (and in one case also rats) (f. 55v, 58). Attributed medical receipts include 'For the Rheumatism a Diet Drink by Mr Pollard' (f. 67) 'Perala a Spanish Doctor's Remedy by which he Cures the Gout' (f. 67), 'Doctr Harvey's Diascordium' (f. 65v), 'Mr Burns' Rect. For the Cure of Sore Eyes' (f. 57v), 'Sir Hans Sloan's Receipt for Sore Weak Eyes as Published by him in 1745' (f. 55). Betweeen ff 61v-62 is a loose receipt 'For a Cancer'. 1 volume: 197 x 145mm., 70 ff. original pagination 1-22 from front (ff.4-12), 1-32 (ff. 55-70) from end, ff 24v-28r, 29-42r, 43v-44r, 45v-46r blank. Cardboard cover with torn paper wrappers. Front cover inscribed 'Book of Receipts in Physick and Cookery'
