About this work

Description

Xiuzhen miyao, a gymnastic (daoyin/qigong) text of unknown origin, was rediscovered and published with a preface by Wang Zai in 1513 (8th year of the Zhengde reign period of the Ming dynasty). It records 49 exercises. This illustration depicts E hu pu shi (The hungry tiger pounces on its food), a technique used to treat jiao chang sha (colic?), etc. It is practised as follows: Keeping the abdomen in contact with the floor, one raises one's arms behind one's body and then also raises one's legs, and circulates Qi for ten breaths.
