Description

Booklet showing the Manual Alphabet and common signs. Deaf and dumb schools and clubs are illustrated as are 21 shadowgraphs (images made from the shadows of people's hands). Includes a portrait of the Abbot Charles de l'Epee (1712-1789), "originator of the deaf and dumb alphabet" and causes of deafness (marriage of relatives, kissing one's lover's ears, smelling salts, damp and boxing of the ears). The cover shows 4 young women in low cut dresses and corsets.
