About this work

Description

Xiuzhen miyao, a gymnastic (daoyin/qigong) text of unknown origin, was rediscovered and published with a preface by Wang Zai in 1513 (8th year of the Zhengde reign period of the Ming dynasty). It records 49 exercises. This illustration depicts Chen Tuan shui gong (the recumbent practice of Chen Tuan), a technique that can be used to treat nocturnal emission. It is practised as follows: One lies supine, pillowing the head on the right hand and performing Qigong with the left hand. The left leg must be extended and the right leg bent. Concentrating the attention, one circulates Qi for 24 breaths.
