About this work

Description

The relief sculptures on the arch date from several different dates. They show the return of the emperor Marcus Aurelius to Rome after campaigns in German and Scythian lands, the emperor leaving Rome, the emperor distributing money, and the emperor interrogating a captive. Between the reliefs are four standing figures of Dacians, shown here headless but subsequently restored with heads. The ground is covered with black and white check tiles
