About this work

Description

False-colour, atomic force micrograph (AFM) showing the topography (surface contours) of amyloid-like fibrils (light blue) on a mica surface (ultraflat surface upon which the fibrils are imaged; dark blue background). Fibrillar amyloid protein aggregates can be found in deposits or plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and diabetes. The amyloid-like fibrils were formed from peptides (short fragments of protein with peptide sequence HYFNIF). The fibril sample was made by Kyle Morris and Louise Serpell at the University of Sussex. Image is 10 x 10 micrometres.
