    PREFACE TO REVISED EDITION The first edition of this book, printed in 1902, has now been revised and brought up-to-date, be^ cause of the increasing demand, and an initial singlq order for a large edition has greatly facilitated bringing before my usual readers the matter I have so long been urged by them to send out in para¬ graph form, for handy reference. In “How to Feed Children,” my earlier work on this subject, a closer sequence of thought and ar¬ gument was followed. In the two books may be found the complete guide needed by those for whom they have been written, but each book serves its individual purpose. “Children’s Diet” takes up the more recent conclusions regarding the care of milk and its modification, methods allowable, etc., etc., and also sifts from many old theories those com sidered most valuable when viewed from present day requirements. In addition to this, careful at¬ tention has been given to the progress made in the school-lunch question and its possibilities; to the influence of play grounds and pure air in the home and their hygienic influence on food conditions; and to newer methods in the preparation, selection
