Hiieh volume contains from 50 to 100 coloured plates, besides numerous illustrations in tlie text. Tlie eoloured plates liave been executed by the most skilful Uerman litliograpliers, in some cases more than twenty impressions being rc(iuired to obtain tlie desired result. Each plate is aeeomimnied liy a full and appropriate description, and each book contains a condensed but adciiuate outline of the subject to wbieli it la devoted. One of the most valuable features of these Atlases is that tliey olTer a ready and satisfactory substitute for clinical observation. Such observation, of course, is availalile only to the residents in largo medical centres; and oven then the reiiulsite variety is seen only after long years of routine lios])ital work. To those unable to attend important clinics those books will bo absolutely indispensable, ns presenting in a complete and convenient form the most accurate reproductions of clinical work, interpreted liy tlie most e.oniiietent of clinical teachers. In planning this series of boidts arrangements were made with reiiresentatlve laililisiuM's in the eliief medical centres of the world for the publication of transiations of the Aliases into nine different languages, the lilhograiihic jilates for all lieing made in (lormany. where work of this kind iias been brought to tiio greatest ])crfection. The enormous ex|«'iise of making tile Jilates being shared hy tiio various jiuhlishera, the cost of eaeii one was reduced to jiractically one-tenth. Thus by reason of tlieir universal translation and repi-oduction, affording international disti'ibution, the publishers have lieen enaliled to secure for tlicse Atlases tlie best artistic and professional talent, to jiroduee them in tlie most elegant style, and yet to offer tlicm at a price heretofore unupprouclied in cheapness. During tlie jiasl year, Saunders' Medical lland-Atlases have been translated and jiublisheil in four more languages —I>ntcli, Jaiianese, Uouinanian, and Bolioinian—so tliat now this remarkalile scries can lie liad in thirteen different languages, or jiraclically every language of tlie civilised world. Tile various languages in which the volumes liave ajijieared include English, German, Frcncli, Italian, liussian, Siianish. .lajianose, Dutch, Danisli, Swedish, Roumanian, Bohemian, and Hungarian. Two years ago, Mr. Saunders contracted witli the original publisher for 100,000 copies of the twenty-six volumes that are to compose tiiis series of books. Of tlicso twenty-six volumes only seventeen have appeared, and yet 80,000 copies have already been imjiorted. • The volumes in this series are selling with remarkable rajiidity, and there is every indication that over 100,000 copies will be sold of those seventeen volumes alone. Basing the sales of future numbers on those already issued, the prospects are that the original contract will be exceeded three times over, and that the sale of tlie coinjilcle series will reach at least 300,000 copies. On account of the marked favour with whieli these books liave been received by tlie medical profession, and the enormous sales tliat they seem destined to reaeli, the jiublisher has been enabled to prepare and furnish special additional coloured jilales, making the series even handsomer and more complete than was originally intended. As an indication of tlie great practical value of tlie Atlases and of the iinmeiise favour with which lliey liave been received, it should bo noted that the Jledical Dejiartmont of tlie U.S. Army has adojitod tiio “Atlas of Ojiorativo .Surgery” as its standard, and has ordered the book in largo ijuantities for distribution to the various regiiiicnts and army posts.
