    the unhealthinefs of Cities will be afto- nifhed that the Inhabitants of Tunis can cxift, in the infedled Atmofphere they breathe. It is occalioned by the putrid Emanations of a Channel, which conveys all the Filth of this City to a neighbour- ing Lake; which Lake, likewife, pro- duces Exhalations that appear no lefs dangerous ; and the falubrity of the Air of Tunis can only be attributed to the depth of the Valley, which comes down to the Gulph, and which, by attradiing the Vapours of the Channel, and the Lake, does not allow them time to acquire that degree of Corruption which would render them hurtful to the Conditution of the In- habitants. On leaving Tunis, I had an opportu- nity of obferving the remains of (he Fort which Charles V. of Spain caufed to be built there. The Sands, cad up by the Tides, have placed fome fmall Dif- tance between it and the Sea ; which is, no doubt, the reafon why the Tunifians have fubdituted that of Gooletta in its dead. We
