    action. Papaverine produces a stage of reflex hyperexcitability followed bv depression in the mammal and coma in the frog. GH CH, O - ^/\CH C CH., ■H, OCH, The introduction of a methyl group in relation to the nitrogen abolishes this eife(;t. Pajjaverine metho-chloride produces a few muscular twitches and then coma in the frog. It produces depression and a few muscular twitches in the guinea-pig. At no stage during onset or recovery from the action of the drug is there any sign of a strychnine-like effect. It thus falls into line with our law with regard to 6 :7-dimethoxy 2-methyl- iso-quinoline derivatives (see above). When this is reduced to the tetrahydro derivative (laudanosine) tlie strychnine-like action reappears. A similar relationship obtains in the simpler compound (): 7-dimethoxy 3 :4-dihydro-i.so-quinoline. This sub-stance re.sembles hydrocotarnine in its strychnine-like action. Methylate the nitrogen and this property disajipears. CH., (i: T-dimethoxy 2-methyl 3 :1-dihjalro-i.so-quinolinium chloride.
