It now became desirable that some coarse woollens should be obtained. The Doc- tor, who had brought with him a small supply of gold to obviate accidents, availed himself of that cash to purchase the clothing tl at became necessary for the prisoners under his charge. . The British troops, in the autumn of 1780, took possession of Portsmouth and Norfolk, and made an incursion into North Carolina ; a camp was direct- ed to be formed near the Great Dismal, for the de- fence of the state. General Gregory, who had dis- tinguished himself in the action near Camden, having been twice wounded with a bayonet while bringing off his brigade, was appointed to the com- mand in that department; and at his particular re- quest, Dr. Williamson was permitted to serve with him.
