About this work
Description
A view towards one of the handles in the form of intertwined vine stems. The fragments of the vase had been excavated by Gavin Hamilton at Hadrian's villa at Tivoli in 1771, were bought by Sir William Hamilton, restored by him and sold to his nephew, the 2nd Earl of Warwick, after which it was known as the "Warwick Vase": Ingamells, loc. cit.

Veduta di fianco dello stesso vaso. In questa si scorge distintamente l'intreccio, e la distribuzione dei due gran tronchi di viti grottescamente distribuiti, che formano il gran manico del vaso, e che co'suoi rami serpeggiando, compongono il principale ornamento in quella situazione del corpo medesimo. Fra i due tronchi si osserva come lo scultore ha simmetricamente collegate, e riunite le due pelli di tigri per mezzo delle zampe di esse, e nel tempo istesso ha fatto servire per un'interessante soggetto ogn'altra lor parte al circondario del tutto di questo vaso.
