    substances, with stomachs, are connected with the general term animal, which is carried down as a fifth connected term. The division, organized substances, without stomachs, including all vegetables, is discon- nected for separate arrangement. The fifth division, animal, is again subdivided into two oppositely cha- racterized groupes. All animals either have vertebrae, a connected chain of hones, including some portion of brain, or are destitute of vertebrae. The term ver- tebral animals is carried down in connexion fpr a sixth subdivision. The term invertebral, discon- nected, including mollusca and insects, for separate arrangement. The sixth division, vertebral animals, is subdivided into pulmonary and impulmonary, with and without lungs. The pulmonary are connected and carried down for subdivision ; the impulmonary, fish, set apart as before. The seventh division, pulmonary, vertebral animals, is divisible into two groupes, with opposite characters; one consists of all which have warm blood, the other, of all which have not warm blood, or blood not exceeding the temperature of the surrounding air or water. The term warm-blooded is carried down in connexion with the preceding division ; the term cold-blooded disconnected for a separate arrangement. The eighth division, warm-blooded, may be again divided into those which produce living progeny, or the warm- blooded viviparous; and those which produce eggs, the warm-blooded oviparous. The term warm-blooded viviparous is carried down for farther division ; the term warm-blooded oviparous separated for distinct arrangement. All viviparous, warm-blooded, pul- monary, vertebral animals possess mammae, or or- gans for yielding milky nourishment to their young. c 2
