Bible. N.T. Luke 1.57-64. Zacharias, the father of John (who was struck dumb for disbelief), reads from a book while Elizabeth holds up a piece of linen. John sleeps upon his reed cross, through which a banner is threaded with the lettering "Ecce agnus dei..."; these are John's first words upon seeing Christ
