About this work

Description

Brain: cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection This is a high power image of CMV ventriculitis (ependymitis) from a patient with HIV. It shows the ventricular lining. The normal lining of ependymal cells has disappeared. The tissue contains degenerate neural tissue and abundant cytomegalovirus inclusion cells. There is a characteristic dense, dark, red intranuclear inclusion with a peripheral clear halo within the nuclear membrane. Also note the blood vessel (bottom right, arrowed) which has CMV inclusions within the endothelial cells. H&E stain.
