Lettering

Sixteenth century lying-in-room, Switzerland. ... Lettering continues: "After a woodcut appearing in the works of Jacob Rueff, a Swiss physician of that period. In nearly all of the old pictures of the lying-in-room the nurse is shown washing the child. Frequently she has her feet immersed in the water to test its temperature. The human foot is a much more sensitive "thermometer" than the hand."
