About this work
1 print : woodcut ; image 8.5 x 8.7 cm
Sixteenth century lying-in-room, Switzerland. ...
On the same mount as record numbers 16917 and 16926
This print is similar in compostion to the frontispiece of: J. Rueff, De conceptu et generatione hominis ..., Frankfurt 1580
Lettering continues: "After a woodcut appearing in the works of Jacob Rueff, a Swiss physician of that period. In nearly all of the old pictures of the lying-in-room the nurse is shown washing the child. Frequently she has her feet immersed in the water to test its temperature. The human foot is a much more sensitive "thermometer" than the hand."
