![The growth of population in the decade from 1880 to 1890 was exceptionally rapid, but I do not think it has been so rapid from the year 1890 to the present time. The Registrar-General’s present estimate is no doubt based on the rate of growth during the previous decade. VITAL STATISTICS ; The total number of Births registered during the year was as follows :— Males, 375 ; Females, 385 ; Total, 760 ; which gives us a Birth Rate on our estimated population of i3’o per thousand. I herewith append the Birth Tables for the past ten years inclusive :— Year. Males. Females. Total 1890 414 355 — 769 1891 407 384 — 791 1892 435 408 - «43 1893 404 436 — 840 1894 450 435 — «H5 1895 427 ••• 3^3 — 810 1896 394 381 — 775 1897 377 352 — ■ 729 1898 1899 354 359 —- 713 375 ••• 3«5 — 760 Totals 4037 3«7« 7915 DEATH RATE. The total number of deaths registered during the year was 722, giving a mortality rate of i2'3 per 1,000 on the estimated population. The Registrar of Deaths has distinguished in the returns the deaths of visitors, as follows :— Visitors 216. Residents 506. Total 722. The Death Rate, therefore, on estimated population of the two classes, would be as follows:— Population f Visitors 37 ] 58,480. \ Residents 8'6 j 12-3 per 1000.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b28942772_0004.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
