This English edition has been prepared under my close supervision, so that it is not actually a translation of the Dutch and German editions, but has been revised and brought up to date. Here I had the good fortune to acquire the constant and never-failing co-operation of Mrs. W. Shaw Dunn, herself a physiologist and neurologist, and I am deeply indebted to her for her great interest and painstaking care which have made this publication possible. I have referred to the statements and opinions of others, whenever justice or the importance of facts seemed to render such reference desirable, but exact references are only given to those publications, which seem to me to pay most attention to the actual subject dealt with in this book.
