    The labor of the poor man reHeves him at least from the burden of fashionable ennui, and the constant pressure of physical inconveniences, from the more elegant, but surely not less intolerable distresses of a refined and romantic sensi- bility. Even those superior intellectual advantages of education, to which the more opulent are almost exclusively ad- mitted, may in some cases open only new avenues to sorrow. The mind, in proportion as it is expanded, exposes a larger surface to impression.
