Leading actors promenading across the foreground of the design; female role actors in female attire, even off-stage; temporary restaurants on the banks of the river; pleasure boats with revellers and crowds on the bridge all represent the plebeian pleasures of Edo

The firework display marked the 'opening' of the river and summer pleasure craft; it was held on the twenty-eighth day of the fifth month
