The painting is described by Adler as follows (left and right have to be reversed for the engraving): "A wide, marshy landscape with patches of water in the foreground stretches out towards low hills on the horizon. Bushes and trees grow everywhere; in the right foreground is a pollard willow in front of a group of tall trees. Beyond these is a view of a hexagonal church-tower on the right, and on the left a peasant’s cottage and a dilapidated manor-house. A storm is coming up, and in the foreground a peasant is urging his wife to make haste; a dog leaps on in front of them. Further off, a man leading two horses is hurrying from the scene, and a sportsman with two dogs is heading in the same direction. A flock of birds are flying to the right, whence the scene is lit by the rays of the setting sun, while a bank of rainclouds is driving up from the left."--Adler, loc. cit.
